All about us
Joseph Poots and Son was founded in 1933 by the late Joseph Poots on Union Street, Lurgan, Northern Ireland, and has served the community for over 80 years.
On January 1st 1937 the firm moved to new premises at 42 Church Place, Lurgan, and remained there until 1983. In 1941, the firm of T.J Hadden and Son of Bridge Street, Portadown was acquired giving a presence in both these adjacent towns.
A move in 1958 to the old Inglis bakery premises on 42 Bridge Street provided extra room, and is the main office today.
“Joseph Poots had two sons Jim and Samuel and a daughter Maisie.”
Unfortunately on Christmas Day 1942 at the age of fourteen Jim died after being thrown from a horse.
Initially the firm used nine Belgium Black horses for its two hearses and three carriages, but in 1949 the horses were sold and a new hearse was purchased for £3,600, a small fortune in those days.
In 1966, Joseph passed away and his son Samuel, already having 20 years experience, took over the running of the firm.
“Providing a quality and professional service has always been our aim.”
Our commitment to excellence can be seen by membership of The National Association of Funeral Directors, The British Institute of Funeral Directors, The Irish Association of Funeral Directors and The British Institute of Embalmers.
We are also members of the Funeral Planning Authority and provide The Fairways Funeral Plan for those who wish to prearrange their funerals.
Joseph Poots and Son is seen as part of the local community. We support various organisations including Yellow Ribbon (Suicide Prevention Programme), Craigavon Cardiac Care Association and the Child Safety Programme ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ amongst many others.
As part of our continued support to families we hold an annual memorial service which has proved to be of support to those in a time of need.
“Continuing to serve, continuing to care.”
